An Independence woman was killed in a single-vehicle rollover accident on Interstate 75 in Walton Saturday afternoon.
Boone County Sheriff’s officials say Angela Wood, 56, was a passenger in a Ford Explorer driven by Mercedes Daniels, also of Independence, when the car experienced a tire malfunction.
The vehicle left the road and overturned several times into a tree line.
Wood was pronounced dead at the scene.
Daniels was injured as she was ejected from the vehicle and an eight-year-old female passenger in the rear of the vehicle was also hurt in the accident.
Daniels was transported by AirCare medical hospital to UC Medical Center in Cincinnati, with suspected life-threatening injuries. The child, whose name is being withheld, was transported to Children’s Hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threating.
The accident remains under investigation.
The Boone County Sheriff’s office released the following statement regarding the incident:
On Saturday, October 1, 2016 at approximately 4:35 p.m. a single vehicle traffic collision
on I-75 at the 176 mile marker in Walton, Kentucky claimed the life of one passenger and sent the driver and another passenger to area hospitals with critical injuries.
A 1998 Ford Explorer, operated by Mercedes Daniels, 58 of Independence, Kentucky was northbound I-75 when her vehicle experienced a tire malfunction and she lost control of the vehicle exiting the roadway and overturning multiple times into a nearby tree line. During the collision Ms. Daniels was ejected from the vehicle. The front passenger of the vehicle, Angela Wood, 56, of Independence was pronounced deceased at the scene. An eight-year-old female relative of Ms. Daniels was a passenger in the rear of the vehicle and sustained injuries as well.
Ms. Daniels was transported by AirCare medical helicopter to University Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio with suspected life threatening injuries. The 8 year old relative (remaining unnamed at this point) was transported by an additional AirCare medical helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio with suspected non-life threatening injuries.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Unit is investigating the collision. Interstate I-75 remained partially opened during the investigation has since fully reopened as of 8:25 p.m. Next of kin have been notified.
