Local Duke Energy crews headed to Florida to help with Hurricane Matthew power restoration effort


Duke Energy is deploying additional resources to the Florida to help with restoration efforts expected after Hurricane Matthew arrives.

Crews began departing from Duke Energy’s District Office at 7600 E. Kemper Road in Cincinnati at approximately 6:30 a.m.

Trucks lined up and began leaving the facility with support staff and specialized equipment headed to Orlando, Florida, where they will be dispatched to the hardest hit areas in the region.

Duke Energy will also be sending crews from other locations departing out of Indiana.

Duke Energy issued the following statement on its Hurricane Preparedness effort:

  • Our staff of experienced meteorologists continue to monitor Hurricane Matthew, a deadly Category 4 storm, and are developing detailed forecasts that our storm response staff are using to develop specific plans for our response.
  • Duke Energy has a detailed storm response plan. As part of our preparation for Hurricane Matthew, we are checking equipment, supplies and inventories to ensure we have adequate materials to make repairs and restore power outages.
  • Staffing models are underway in Florida and Duke Energy employees are conducting other activities as part of the company’s comprehensive storm plan, including working closely with teammates in Florida and to determine where assistance will be needed most, and by when.
  • Duke Energy Florida is mobilizing 2,150 linemen and vegetation personnel to safe locations who will be prepared to respond to outages once Hurricane Matthew reaches Florida, with more ready to respond as needed.
  • Regularly scheduled non-emergency work throughout Duke Energy service territories may be rescheduled due to the reallocation of resources in storm-impacted areas.
  • Customers should expect power outages. If we experience significant damage to our electric system, outages could be widespread and extended.
