As security breaches become more common at all levels of society – from the presidential to the personal – Northern Kentucky University will convene national and local experts in the field for its ninth annual Cybersecurity Symposium.

NKU is designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance/Cyber Defense by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. The event is hosted by Chase College of Law and the College of Informatics.

“Today we find ourselves increasingly surrounded by smart devices, and most of these devices are vulnerable to hacking and other intrusions. Protecting ourselves, and helping ensure a safe and ethically responsible digital environment, is of paramount importance,” said Kevin Kirby, dean of the College of Informatics.

National and local experts will discuss topics such as online privacy and ethics in the information age; how to secure mobile apps, cloud storage, and databases against cyberattacks; and security for the medical industry, where healthcare devices are increasingly online.

“The rapid pace of technological change presents unique challenges in the areas of law and ethics. Our faculty and students tackle these issues every day at our W. Bruce Lunsford Academy for Law, Business + Technology, and we are pleased to bring these conversations to the community,” said Jeffrey Standen, dean of the Chase College of Law.

The symposium is 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21 at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington. Speakers include: Murray W. Kenyon, Senior Vice President of the BITS Cybersecurity and Risk Management programs at the Financial Services Roundtable; Brian Minick, CEO and Co-Founder of Morphick Cyber Security; and Justin Hall, Director of Security Services at CBTS.

Sponsors include Morphick Cyber Security, CBTS, Venafi, Nexum, CenturyLink, Frost Brown Todd, Vorys Sater Seymour & Pease, Nexigen Communications, SDGblue, CommitDBA, the W. Bruce Lunsford Academy for Law, Business + Technology, US Bank, Pomeroy, Encore Technologies, ISACA, ISSA, Bluegrass HIMSS, InfraGard, and (ISC)2.
