Look Here! Covington outdoor exhibit takes a look at city’s history, highlights walkability of neighborhoods

Those historic images that have begun popping up all over downtown Covington are part of the exhibit Look Here! Covington.

Through a partnership between the City of Covington, Renaissance Covington, and the Kenton County Public Library, Look Here! Covington will be the second neighborhood to host this photography exhibit.

Look Here! is an outdoor public history exhibit developed for Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine neighborhood by Anne Delano Steinert.

The exhibit was open from November 2015 to March 2016.lookherecov

The installation featured historic photos on existing poles placed so that people could experience current and historic views, side by side, allowing viewers to make new connections with the past and their neighborhood. The project was specifically developed to be replicated in other neighborhoods.

Fifty photos and installation sites have been identified in and around Roebling Point, the Central Business District, Mainstrasse and the West Sixth Street corridor.

Images were selected in connection with the celebration of the 50thanniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, which seeks to preserve historical and archaeological sites in the United States.

The photos and sites selected share the story of Covington’s development not only during the early years, but through to recent history. “History is not only the 1800s, the beautiful part of Covington is how it has evolved from even 40 years ago.” says Emily Ahouse, Preservation and Planning Specialist for the City of Covington.

The exhibit will emphasize the walkability of Covington’s neighborhoods, promoting connectivity between Mainstrasse and downtown Madison Avenue and even nod to Covington’s recent public art effort, Curb’d, in which five parking spots in urban Covington were taken over for an art installation.

Look Here! Covington Historical Photography Exhibit will be on display from November 2016 through April 2017.
