Bruce Battaglia’s Friday picks for Turfway Park


Turfway Park’s Bruce Battaglia provides daily picks and comments for the Trib during the live racing meets.

turfway-logoRace 1 JIFQUICK loves this track and distance and reunites with his favorite rider Alonso Quinonez. MARCHWOOD is very quick and the one to catch. HUGHHOOFNER has won five with four seconds from eleven starts this year and teams back up with McKee.

Race 2 ROTTAKEN is an expensive son of two time horse of the year Curlin and has plenty of class. He is coming in off a strong run at Churchill. ARCH LEADER broke his maiden for $25,000 at Gulfstream Park but changed trainers after three troubled races in a row. He has shown a fast work since coming to Turfway. DANCING ARTIE has been running well with much classier.

Race 3 SCOUT IT OUT won back to back races at Belmont on the very tough New York circuit. Both of these were sprinting on the turf. She hasn’t started in a year but runs for excellent layoff trainer Wesley Ward. MY CALENDER GIRL has a strong record here from eleven starts and likes the Polytrack. SUCCESSFUL BRAT has been racing well with allowance company and shows a fast work.

Race 4 NEVERADULLMOMENT come in off a win last out and despite only one start over this track he beat tough milers by ten lengths last December. FEAR THE KITTEN has been in the money here in five of six starts. CANDY CHARGER is dropping in class.

turfway-paddockRace 5 ARCELOR is trained by one of the best in America with two-year-olds and looks like a winner. MISS FRANK E has the speed to beat here on the drop down. SKY TIME NOW is making a big drop down in class.

Race 6 TERRIFYING is son of champion Hansen and    is bred for speed and all of his works have been quick. DURANGO DAN is well bred and in good hands. GREENSTEIN has shown good speed and could go all the way.

Race 7 WHISKEY SHINER has been at the top of his game and should be capable of handling these. NORTHAMPTON KID comes in off two wins in a row and can repeat. MR. CHOW likes this track and is dropping down in class.

Race 8 HENNYTHELOVEPENNY ships from California showing plenty of ability and changes trainers to twenty four win percentage Stephen Lyster.   ELUSIVE HOLIDAY has been in top form, adds blinkers and has a win over this surface.      BASHEBA has won three of her last five handily and should be considered.

Race 9 KITTEN IN MAY has shown much better since switching trainers. BIG JOHNNY D runs mostly on the turf and figures to like the footing.  DYNAMICAL moves back to his favorite surface.
