The Columbus Dispatch and other news outlets are reporting that former Sen. John Glenn, an iconic American hero, has died at age 95.
Surrounded by his family, including his wife of 73 years, Annie, Glenn died at the Ohio State Univerity Wexner Medical Center in Columbus.
Glenn became a national legend as an astronaut, being the first American to orbit the Earth in 1962 and 36 years later booming the oldest man in space — at 77 — as a member of the seven-astronaut crew of the shuttle Discovery.
As a Marine Corps pilot he woke the transcontinental flight speed record.
Later the distinguished himself as an United States Senator where he served four terms.
