NKU’s Eric Jackson to receive World Civility Ambassador and Gold Rule Award at event Tuesday

For more than two decades, NKU’s Dr. Eric Jackson has dedicated his professional and personal life to promoting the principles of equality, civility, and justice.

That work will be recognized when he receives the World Civility Ambassador and Golden Rule Award from the national nonprofit organization iChange Nations. Ambassador Clyde Rivers will present the award during Tuesday at NKU’s James C. and Rachel M. Votruba Student Union Ballroom.

“Across this nation and around the globe, universities play a very important role in advancing those principles. We don’t all agree on every topic, that is certain. But we encourage civil discussion and honest dialogue,” said NKU President Geoffrey S. Mearns. “These are important conversations that must continue, and college campuses provide a safe environment that allows us to grow as individuals and as a community. Dr. Jackson has been a leader in this area on our campus.”

The Golden Rule Award is presented to humanitarians and humans rights activists in recognition of their work to promote equality and the principle, ‘Treat others the way you want to be treated.’ As a World Civility Ambassador, Jackson will also be charged with promoting those principles.

“I am honored to receive this recognition, which would not have been possible without the support of my colleagues across campus,” Jackson said. “I look forward to helping promote a positive message of equality and empathy not only on campus, but beyond.”

Dr. Jackson is director of NKU’s Black Studies Program and has taught in the Department of History and Geography since 1992. His areas of focus include The Ethnical and Theological Philosophies of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; the History of African American Education; and the History of Race Relations. He has also been published in local, regional, and international journals such as the Ohio Valley History and the International Journal on World Peace, and he has published books including Reflections of African American Leaders in the Peace Movement and Northern Kentucky.

The award reception is 4-5 p.m. Tuesday in the Votruba Student Union Ballroom. For more information, visit goldenruledrrivers.blogspot.com.
