Turfway Park in Florence provides daily selections and comments for the Tribune during the live racing meets.
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 15
RACE 1
ALWAYS LOVE APRIL has run well in both of her races after coming off of a six month layoff. She just missed last out and should be ready to win tonight. ATRUEVISION moves up a notch after a game win last out. She figures to get a good trip from the inside post and is the one to beat. LI’LBITO’GOLD was overmatched in her first race back after a long layoff and should run much better tonight.
RACE 2
ONE BUCK ROMA is riding a two race win streak and appears to be in a good spot to make it three in a row at short odds. HIGH MYSTERY was well beaten in his last two by much better competition but will be tough on the drop back to the bottom. CHASING GREG also takes a class drop and is a contender.
RACE 3
JOE FLYER has a solid record here at Turfway and ran well last out to finish second. He rates the slight edge with John McKee back aboard for Bill Connelly. HOWLING WOLF has been off since June but Brett Santangelo’s horses are running very well right now. He has the speed to be on or near the lead and is the one to catch. JOURNEY PROUD will be running late.
RACE 4
LOVE THE POWER faded after flashing speed in a tough race at Belmont back in June. Wesley Ward drops her in for $7,500 which isn’t a good sign but she has been training well and rates the slight edge over PARKERELIZABETH in a close call. The latter also takes a class drop and is in the capable hands of Mike Maker. She is definitely the main competition. C CODE looks best of the rest.
RACE 5
BLEW BY TOO came up a bit short last out after pressing a very fast pace. She figures to be in a good position throughout tonight and gets the nod in a well matched field. CHEROKEE CALLIE didn’t beat much last out but she did it impressively and will be tough again this evening. DEVIL ALERT also comes off of a win and is a definite threat.
RACE 6
THECLA was third in her first race back after a ten month layoff. She figures to move forward off of that effort and looks like a winner for Aaron West and Jimenez. CARMELA finished a couple of lengths behind the top pick last out and was also coming off of a layoff. She is the one to beat. GONNA FIND HER has been on the sidelines since March but has posted some quick works for the return. She drops in for a tag and has to be respected.
RACE 7
STORMY MISSION just missed last out and a repeat of that performance would make him a winner for Richard Finucane with McKee back aboard tonight. WEST OF EAST TEXAS ran very well in his lone start on the Turfway Poly and may not have cared for the track last out at Oaklawn Park. He will appreciate the move back to Kentucky and is the one to beat with Gilligan riding. SIEGFREEDROESCH rates a chance.
RACE 8
CURLIN’S KID ran poorly last out against a much tougher starter allowance field. He drops back to the bottom and appears to be in a good spot to pick up the win tonight. DISCREET GLEN has the speed to be on or near the lead and has been in the money in all seven of his races here at Turfway. TOP GATO will be running at the end.
RACE 9
RED DANE didn’t show much in her first two races but has been training well for Charlie LoPresti at Keeneland. She could spring the mild upset in what appears to be a very good field of maidens. MYDRINKSELECTION just missed last out and was well clear of the third place finisher in that one. She has the outside post but gets blinkers for the first time and looks like the one to beat. ON A MISSION and SOLE MISS both ran well in their debuts and can be expected to improve tonight.
