Boys’ basketball playoffs: Camels strong comeback in second half wins 10th Region opener

Campbell County needed a strong comeback in the second half to get past Clark County, 55-45, in the first round of the 10th Region boys’ basketball tournament at Mason County on Wednesday.

The Camels trailed, 24-19, at halftime, but they pulled ahead by outscoring Clark County, 14-6, in the third period to take a 33-30 lead. They kept the momentum in the fourth quarter and led by as much as 16 points, 48-32.

Campbell County’s leading scorer was senior forward Garren Bertsch, who got 11 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter. Senior guard Cole Hegyi had 15 points for the Camels.

Clark County junior Will Philpot posted a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. After scoring 17 of his team’s first 26 points, he had just three points the rest of the game.

Campbell County (29-4) will play Bracken County (17-14) in a regional semifinal game at 6 p.m. Monday. The Camels’ first loss this season was to Bracken County, 81-74, on Dec. 9. They have won every game against 10th Region teams since then.

Scott will play tournament host Mason County in the final 10th Region first-round game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. In the 8th Region at Henry County, Walton-Verona will play South Oldham in a first-round game at 8:15 p.m. Thursday.
