Mackenzie Schwarber

Junior forward Mackenzie Schwarber made a layup just before the final horn sounded to give Campbell County a 48-46 win over Bourbon County in the first round of the 10th Region girls’ basketball tournament on Tuesday at Harrison County High School.

The winning basket was the only shot Schwarber made during the fourth quarter when her team outscored Bourbon County, 15-6, to come back and win the game. The Camels’ rally was led by Taylor Clos with seven points and Chloe Seckman with six in the final period.

Campbell County, the defending regional champion, got off to a good start and took a 16-7 lead going into the second quarter. That’s when Bourbon County senior forward Chariss Wilson scored 11 of her game-high 24 points to put her team on top, 23-22, at halftime. The Colonels extended the lead to 40-33 going into the fourth quarter.

Clos finished with 17 points and Seckman had 11 for the Camels, who got nine of their 17 field goals from behind the 3-point line. Mallory Holbrook and Seckman had three treys each and Clos had two.

The victory puts Campbell County (20-12) in the regional semifinals for the third straight year. The Camels will play Mason County (22-8) at 7:30 p.m. Friday with the winner advancing to Saturday’s championship game.
