Newport Central Catholic senior pitcher Haley Meyers retired every batter she faced in five innings and her team defeated Dayton, 10-0, in a 35th District semifinal game on Tuesday at Newport Vets Field.
Meyers had five strikeouts in the perfect game that ended in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Thoroughbreds took a 10-run lead by scoring six runs off errors committed by Dayton.
NewCath (23-10) will take a 10-game winning streak into the district final against Highlands at 5 p.m. Thursday. Both teams will advance to next week’s 9th Region tournament at Veterans Park in Newport
The other softball teams that have clinched 9th Region berths are Boone County, Dixie Heights, St. Henry, Notre Dame and Holy Cross. The remaining berth will be decided Wednesday when Ryle plays Conner in a 33rd District semifinal game at Conner.
The 9th Region baseball bracket will be finalized on Wednesday when the winners of the Ryle vs. Cooper and Highlands vs. Newport games claim the two remaining slots. The six teams that have already qualified are Conner, Dixie Heights, St. Henry, Covington Catholic, Beechwood and Newport Central Catholic.
