NKU announces radiation therapy program designed to help fill national and regional need

Northern Kentucky University’s College of Health Professions has created a new program in radiation therapy that will begin this fall to help fill a national and regional need.

“We are pleased to expand our educational offerings to fill the national and local need for radiation therapists,” said Dr. Dale Scalise-Smith, dean of the College of Health Professions.

Radiation therapists treat cancer and other diseases in patients by administering radiation treatments. Radiation therapists work in hospitals, offices of physicians and outpatient centers.

The radiation therapy program at NKU is a full-time program that will result in a Bachelor of Science degree in radiation therapy. The program is eight semesters long and includes instruction in patient care, pathology and treatment principles, radiation physics and biology, safety and ethics.

Clinical practice and supplemental instruction will be provided at sites throughout Kentucky, southeast Indiana and Greater Cincinnati. Students will spend about 20 hours per week at clinical sites.

Graduates will be eligible to take the national registry examination given by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Median pay for a practicing radiation therapist is $80,160, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
