The City of Covington Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department kicks off the 2017 pool season with an opening day celebration on Saturday. The celebration will take place from noon to 6 p.m. at each of the pool and waterpark locations.
Covington pools are located at Randolph Park, Eighth Street and Greenup Street, and Goebel Park, Dalton Street and W. Eighth Street. The Bill Cappel Youth Sports Complex waterpark is located at 43rd Street and Decoursey Avenue.
In addition to swimming, there will be activities throughout the day, including DJ’s spinning vinyl records at Randolph and Goebel pools and comedy and magic from Presto Paul at the Bill Cappel Youth Sports Complex waterpark. Additionally, each of the three locations will feature ninja warrior skill activities and games presented by Skool Aid as well as free Kona Ice shaved ice slushies.
New this year, registration for the 2017 pool season will take place during a resident’s first visit to a Covington pool. Residents should bring proof of residency (a valid driver’s license or State ID) and complete the 2017 Pool Application. Applications are available on the City’s website and at each of the pool and waterpark locations.
If a resident has recently relocated to Covington and is not yet in possession of an ID with proof of address, a lease or utility bill showing a Covington address along with a photo ID is acceptable. The 2017 pool season starts Saturday, June 10 and extends to Sunday, August 6.
Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and will be required to complete and sign their own form. Parents and grandparents may register children or grandchildren under the age of 18. Each registration comes with three guest passes to be used throughout the season.
The opening day pool celebration is free and open to Covington residents that have registered for a 2017 Covington pool pass. Registration will take place during the resident’s first pool visit.
Also new this year, the City of Covington has transitioned management and operation responsibilities to SwimSafe Pool Management Inc.
Parks and Recreation Program Coordinator Erin Smiley stated, “Partnering with SwimSafe to take over the management and operations of the pools has allowed us to focus on programming for youth and their families to be engaged at the pools.”
Additionally, the City will be partnering with the Covington Independent School District to provide free lunches for youth, Monday through Friday at all three locations. The City has also teamed up with Covington Partners to coordinate field trips for students enrolled in the Covington Summer Scholars program and opportunities to earn badges for its superhero themed program.
With expanded programming and events, the Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department encourages Covington residents to come out and take advantage of these free opportunities and regularly scheduled programs throughout the season.
Programs featured at each of the three locations include youth kinetic games presented by Skool Aid and youth arts and craft workshops led by City staff.
SwimSafe will lead safety classes on July 3 and July 6, and lead swimming lessons July 10 through July 14 at Randolph and Goebel pools.
On August 6, Covington dog lovers will have the opportunity to participate in the Dog Days of Summer event. Randolph and Goebel pools will re-open from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. for Covington residents and their dogs to enjoy. “Dog poo” relay races, treats and much more will be available.
