Following the death of its founder and CEO last fall, Carespring’s leadership team is now in place with expanded responsibilities and commitment to continuing the legacy of excellence in healthcare.
Barry Bortz founded Carespring in 1986 to provide a different kind of experience in rehabilitation and long-term healthcare services. The organization is among the region’s largest provider of nursing care services with 12 locations, with one currently under construction in Boone County.
Bortz worked with his leadership team for 20 years, leaving the organization with a plan for continuation of services with the same level of commitment and competence.
Northern Kentucky resident, Chris Chirumbolo replaces founder Barry Bortz as the organization’s CEO and President. “I am honored to continue the Carespring legacy of excellence in health, nursing and rehabilitative care,” said Chirumbolo.

It is an honor to work with our outstanding team of committed caregivers and employees who makes us proud every day.” Chirumbolo began his career at Carespring 16 years ago as a physical therapist, then served as Executive Vice President of Rehabilitation and most recently as Chief Operations Officer.
Chirumbolo will lead the six-person executive team who oversee the 2,200 Carespring employees. David Eppers continues to serve as the Chief Financial Officer and John Muller has been appointed as Chief Operating Officer. Dr. Art Gendelman M.D. is the chief medical officer, Chief Development Officer, Kim Majick heads up marketing and admissions, and Barbara McFarland is responsible for Human Resources.
Construction is underway currently for Carespring’s newest facility, Boonespring in Union Kentucky. “Boone County is the fastest-growing county in Kentucky but has one of the fewest number of nursing care beds,” said COO John Muller, also a Northern Kentuckian.
“We are working as fast as we can to complete the project and bring a modern, state-of-the art nursing care and rehabilitative facility to the citizens,” The new care center, slated to open in 2018, is located on a nine-acre site in unincorporated Boone County, just south of St Timothy Parish in Union. It will specialize in short-term rehabilitative care and long-term nursing care and will include a combination of private and companion suite rooms with dining and exercise rooms along with the communities’ most popular feature, a Starbucks coffee shop.
