Freedom’s Marty Anderson signed by Mets, southpaw becomes third player from team signed in 2017

The Florence Freedom, presented by Titan Mechanical Solutions, have announced that the contract of left-handed pitcher Marty Anderson has been purchased by the New York Mets.

“Marty was with us last year for a very short stint,” said Freedom manager Dennis Pelfrey. “We knew his stuff was good, but he wasn’t able to hold runners very well, and we told him that he needed to work on that and come back in the spring and fight for a starting job with us. He changed that part of his game completely, and that won him the job,”

Anderson had been announced as a Frontier League all-star Monday afternoon, after going 6-2 with a 2.95 ERA over ten appearances (eight starts) this season. His most recent outing was last Saturday in the first game of the Freedom’s doubleheader at Bosse Field in Evansville, where he struck out five batters over six innings and held the Otters to two runs on just one hit and two walks.

“His stuff was still good, but now he’s able to control the running game,” Pelfrey said. “I’m absolutely ecstatic for the kid. He made the all-star team in his first year with us, and it’s a big day for him. We wish him nothing but the best.”

Anderson is the 36th former Freedom player to sign with a Major League Baseball organization, and already the third to do so in 2017, following fellow pitchers Logan Longwith and Matt Pobereyko.

The Florence Freedom are members of the independent Frontier League and play all home games at UC Health Stadium located at 7950 Freedom Way in Florence, KY. The Freedom can be found online at FlorenceFreedom.com, or by phone at 859-594-4487.
