High school students from the Tri-State and surrounding Midwestern cities gained real-world experience and practice in the field of nursing during the Pathways to Nursing Summer Camp.
The free, four-day camp, presented by St. Elizabeth Healthcare and Northern Kentucky University (NKU), aims at attracting students to the health care profession through interactive lessons and job shadowing.
“This is a unique opportunity for students to observe nursing professionals in the field as they map out their career plan,” said Lois Post, health career program coordinator at St. Elizabeth Healthcare. “We’ve seen what an impact shadowing can have on their futures.”
Students spent two days at NKU meeting faculty, learning about its College of Health Professions, before touring St. Elizabeth Edgewood to observe nurses on the emergency, labor and delivery, surgery and intensive care floors.
The last day of the camp was spent at St. Elizabeth’s new Simulation Center where students split up into small groups and rotated through stations that simulated the emergency room, labor and delivery, intensive care and respiratory care. Real-life scenarios, like performing CPR on patient who had been in a car accident after texting and driving, allowed students to apply their knowledge and interact with lifelike mannequins and state-of-the-art equipment.
The Pathways to Nursing Summer Camp accepts 30 students each year on a first-come, first-serve basis. Applications for next year’s camp will be available in March 2018.
