Campbell County to hold first Citizens’ Academy educational program about workings of government

Campbell County Fiscal Court has announced that it will begin a new program designed to improve civic education and increase citizen engagement in the workings of the general county government.

The first iteration of the Campbell County Citizens’ Academy will launch in fall 2017.

An eight-week educational program, the county will select about 20-25 participants to meet each Monday evening from 7-9 p.m. between September 25 and November 13, 2017. Through presentations on a wide variety of subjects given by local elected officials and county and other staff, participants will receive first-hand knowledge of how county tax dollars are put to work to fund the basic services of the general government.

“I am glad to announce the debut of our Campbell County Citizens’ Academy,” said Steve Pendery, Judge/Executive. “Our goal in creating this program is to share information about the county’s structure and services with more people; if we are successful, my hope is that more citizens will become interested and more engaged in the important public work that we do.”

Specific sessions will cover topics such as: how the county budget is formed and adopted; how public safety, including emergency management and 911 dispatch, are managed; how road repairs are prioritized; how land use and zoning decisions impact new growth and development; and many more.

Campbell County Fiscal Court is encouraging residents and business owners to apply. Interested individuals must submit an application by September 13, to be considered. More information and the application document can be found at the website.

With seats in both Alexandria and Newport, Campbell County Fiscal Court is the local government for Kentucky’s eighth-largest county. Overseeing a budget of roughly $40M and a staff of 200+, the Fiscal Court works diligently every day to efficiently provide a range of services to residents and businesses.

Judge/Executive Steve Pendery is now serving his fifth term as the county’s chief executive, having first been elected to the post in November 1998.
