Monmouth Street will undergo improvements and other infrastructure in the city will be reconstructed, replaced and maintained under two programs that have been approved by The Newport City Commission.
The Commission has approved two bids related to the Monmouth Streetscape Improvement Project that total nearly $300,000, which will be paid from the City’s Community Development Fund. This funding is from program income dollars associated with a Community Development Block Grant loan that has been repaid back to the City over time.
Post top and pendant lighting along Monmouth Street will be replaced with more efficient LED light fixtures and all poles, posts and other streetscape amenities will be repainted. The project also includes improvements to the street’s existing pavers as a later phase.
Two bids were received for each project. The bids were awarded to Atkins and Stang for the LED Lighting ($185,930) and Baynum Painting ($115,924.94).
The City has also approved the use of $304,500 from the state of Kentucky Muncipal Road Aid Program. City Manager Tom Fromme said funds, which are allocated through a formula based on a city’s population, will be spent on as needed basis for various public works projects througout the city including but not limited to:
- Resurfacing, rehabilitation or reconstruction and signalization for city streets
- Filling potholes
- Snow removal and treatment
- Street cleaning
- Line painting
- Repair or replacement of sidewalks, curbs, gutters, lighting and signage when done in conjunction with a street reconstruction project.
