After playing its first six football games against teams in higher classes, Beechwood blasted Bellevue, 49-0, in a Class 1A, District 4 seeding game on Thursday at Bellevue.

Logan Castleman of Beechwood

Beechwood, last year’s Class 1A state champion, took a 28-0 lead in the first half with Logan Castleman scoring the first two touchdowns on a 36-yard screen pass and 5-yard run.

Castleman got his third TD on a 3-yard run in the third quarter to make it 42-0. With a running clock in the fourth quarter, Beechwood scored one last touchdown on a pass from reserve quarterback Chris Layton to senior Daniel Mescher.

It was the first district game for both small-school teams. The win raises Beechwood’s overall record to 5-2 with the losses coming to Covington Catholic and Simon Kenton, which compete on the Class 5A and 6A levels in the playoffs. Bellevue’s record now stands at 4-3.

Bracken County defeated Brossart, 45-26, in a Class 1A, District 5 seeding game on Thursday at Bracken County.

The Mustangs had a 19-18 lead at the end of the first half, but Bracken County ran off 27 straight points in the third and fourth quarters to put the game away.

Both teams now have a 1-1 record in district play with two games remaining. Brossart (4-3) will try to snap a two-game losing streak in a district game at Paris on Oct. 13.

Brossart’s first-half touchdowns were scored on a pair of short runs by Bradley Moore and a 58-yard pass from Tyler MacDonald to Bryce Donnelly. The Mustangs didn’t score again until late in the fourth quarter.

There are several other district seeding games on Friday’s local high school football schedule, including Ludlow at Dayton in Class 1A, Lloyd at Newport in Class 2A, Dixie Heights at Highlands in Class 5A and Ryle at Cooper in Class 6A.
