The Bishop Brossart girls’ soccer team that finished the regular season with a 3-13-1 record is going to the 10th Region tournament as 37th District champion.
In the district final on Thursday, Brossart defeated Campbell County, 2-1, in a penalty kick shootout and carried off the championship trophy for the fourth time in the last six years. Both teams advance to next week’s 10th Region tournament at Clark County High School with the draw scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Friday.
After losing its last eight regular season matches, the Brossart team that has mostly underclassmen in the starting lineup knocked off Scott, 3-2, in the opening round of district play to set up a rematch with Campbell County. This is the sixth consecutive year that the two teams have played for the district title.
The match was tied, 1-1, at the end of regulation and two overtime periods so each team chose five players for a penalty kick shootout. Brossart won the shootout, 4-2, with junior goalkeeper Mariah Frommeyer putting the ball in the net on the penalty kick that clinched the victory.
Frommeyer was named most valuable player on the district all-tournament team that included three of her Brossart teammates — freshman forward Rosie Jump, junior defender Alaina Nienaber and senior forward Ally Schultz.
The 37th District boys’ final was also decided in a penalty kick shootout on Thursday. Campbell County defeated Brossart, 1-0, in that match with both teams moving on to the 10th Region tournament at Harrison County next week.
The fields are set for the 9th Region boys’ and girls’ soccer tournaments and seven local high schools — Ryle, Cooper, St. Henry, Dixie Heights, Holy Cross, Highlands and Newport Central Catholic — will have teams in both brackets.
Covington Catholic is the returning champion in the 9th Region boys’ tournament to be played at Tower Park in Ft. Thomas. The draw is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Highlands High School.
Notre Dame will be back to defend its title in the 9th Region girls’ tournament at Dixie Heights High School. Those pairings will be decided at noon on Saturday.
Simon Kenton is the defending champion in the 8th Region girls’ tournament to be played at the South Oldham High School. The Simon Kenton and Walton-Verona boys’ teams advanced to 8th Region competition at the Walton-Verona Sports Complex.
