The Conner girls’ basketball team that’s off to an 8-2 start will finish out the first month of the season with three games on its home court by hosting the LaRosa’s Holiday Classic this week.
Six of the Cougars’ eight wins have come against downstate or out-of-state opponents and they’ll be facing Louisville Assumption (4-5) in the first round of their tournament at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.
The other first-round matchups are: Highlands vs. Fern Creek, 2 p.m.; Cooper vs. Franklin County, 3:45 p.m. and Notre Dame vs. Nelson County, 5:30 p.m. Franklin County was runner-up in last year’s state tournament.
Conner’s leading scorers going into Wednesday’s game are junior guards Courtney Hurst and Savannah Jordan, who are averaging 14 and 12.4 points per game.
During a tournament in Lexington last week, Jordan netted 40 points in three games with 10 of her 14 field goals coming from behind the 3-point line.
Junior forward Maddie Burcham is also doing well for the Cougars. She’s averaging 9.5 points and 6.8 rebounds while shooting 51.5 percent (34 of 66) from the field.
Villa Madonna and Bellevue are the other girls’ basketball teams hosting holiday tournaments this week.
