The Bishop Brossart boys’ and girls’ basketball teams have a big weekend ahead of them. On Friday, they’ll play district seeding games against Campbell County in the annual Alexandria Crosstown Classic double-header. On Saturday, both teams will play Calvary Christian in the opening round of the 10th Region All “A” Classic small-school tournaments.

Campbell County is a heavy favorite in the girls’ game against Brossart that’s set for 6 p.m. Friday at Campbell County Middle School. The Camels are off to a 16-1 start and were voted No. 1 in this week’s Northern Kentucky coaches poll. Brossart (9-4) received just one point in the coaches balloting even though the Mustangs are riding a five-game winning streak.

In the local boys’ coaches poll, Campbell County (13-2) was voted No. 3 and Brossart received just three voting points. The Camels won last year’s game, 74-45, but the Mustangs have won four straight going into Friday’s rematch at 7:30 p.m.

Brossart teams will be the favorites in their 10th Region All “A” Classic games against Calvary Christian at 5:45 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at Nicholas County High School. The winners will advance to regional semifinal games. Last year, the Mustangs lost in the championship game of the girls’ tournament and the semifinals of the boys’ tournament.

Zach Hamberg

The current Brossart boys’ team has three double-figure scorers in the lineup. The leader is senior forward Zach Hamberg, who has a 13.8 average with 39 of his 60 field goals coming from 3-point range. Junior guard J.D. Schumacher and sophomore forward Ethan Eilerman are both averaging 10.2 points and shooting 45 percent from the field.

The leading scorer and rebounder on the Brossart girls’ team is freshman forward Marie Kiefer. In the first 13 games of her varsity career, she averaged 12.4 points and 8.2 rebounds while shooting 48 percent from the field. Ten of the 15 players on the Mustangs’ roster are freshmen or sophomores. The only seniors are forward Ally Schultz and guard Taylor Moore, who is averaging 8.8 points.

The 8th Region All “A” Classic has first-round games scheduled for girls on Monday and boys on Tuesday. Last year, Walton-Verona won the boys’ title and the girls’ team was regional runner-up.

Holy Cross is the defending champion in the 9th Region All “A” Classic girls’ tournament that also starts on Monday. The boys’ tournament will begin Monday, Jan. 15.
