Two boys’ high school basketball coaches who have teams playing in district playoff games on Wednesday night will be inducted into the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame earlier that day.

Mike Code

Brossart coach Mike Code and Boone County coach Greg McQueary are two of the five men to be inducted during a ceremony that begins at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Villa Hills Civic Club.

McQueary has spent 14 of his 27 seasons as a head basketball coach at Boone County. The Rebels have recorded five 20-win seasons and won the 2012 9th Region championship during his tenure.

Code has a 258-134 record in 14 years as Brossart’s head coach. Ten of his teams won the 10th Region All “A” Classic and his 2006-07 team won the small-school state championship.

The other Hall of Fame inductees on Wednesday will be former Simon Kenton basketball player Michael Brock, former Holmes girls’ basketball coach Dennis Soard and Conner head football coach Dave Trosper.

The guest speaker will be Dick Maile, who coached high school basketball in Northern Kentucky following an All America career in college. He will share his memories of four Hall of Fame members how recently passed away — Clay Eifert, Jim Brock, Bob Barton and Mike Murphy — and talk about his grandson playing baseball in the major leagues.

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony is free and open to the public.

Local players among finalists for Mr. and Miss Kentucky Basketball

Three girls’ basketball players from local high schools are among the finalists for Miss Kentucky Basketball selected by members of the Kentucky Basketball Coaches Association.

In the voting for Mr. Kentucky Basketball finalists, Adam Kunkel of Cooper and C.J. Fredrick were both selected from the 9th Region.

Coach of the Year voting was also conducted by association members. The boys’ award-winners include Grant Brannen of Walton-Verona in the 8th Region and Tim Sullivan of Cooper in the 9th Region. The girls’ award-winners include Joel Steczynski of Dixie Heights in the 9th Region and Beau Menefee of Campbell County in the 10th Region.

CovCath will celebrate senior athletes recruited by college teams

Grant Dyer and Malachi Pike, two seniors on the Covington Catholic football team that won the Class 5A state championship last season, will take part in a ceremony for college recruits in the school gym at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Dyer will be attending the University of Dayton. In addition to being a starting linebacker for CovCath, he was a  running back, punt returner, punter and kicker.

Pike will continue his football career at Butler University. He was the leading receiver on CovCath’s state championship team with 41 receptions for 695 yards and nine touchdowns.

The other CovCath senior athletes taking part in Wednesday’s ceremony are soccer player Dominic Russo (Thomas More) and baseball players Alex Kennedy (Georgetown) and Adam Schneider (Sinclair).
