Good shooting keeps Campbell County boys in region playoffs; Walton-Verona loses after late rally

A solid shooting performance carried the Campbell County boys’ basketball team to a 70-60 win over Harrison County in the opening round of the 10th Region tournament on Wednesday at Mason County Fieldhouse.

The Camels shot 56 percent (21 of 37) from the field and 73 percent (25 of 34) at the foul line in the victory that raised their record to 26-5 and puts them in the regional semifinals for the fourth time in the last five years.

Campbell County’s leading scorer was junior forward Reid Jolly with 27 points, 10 above his season average. He was 10-of-13 from the field, pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked six shots.

The Camels’ other double-figure scorers were junior guard Drew Wilson (14), senior guard Joel Day (13) and senior forward Tanner Clos (13). Day made all 10 of his free throw attempts and is now shooting 87.8 percent (137 of 156) from the line this season.

Jolly had 19 points and six rebounds in the first half that ended with the Camels holding a 36-26 lead. Harrison County scored six straight points at the end of the third quarter to cut the margin to 50-42.

Late in the fourth quarter, Clos made a free throw that put Campbell County ahead 64-52. But Harrison County junior guard Quenton Turley made back-to-back 3-point goals to quickly cut that 12-point lead in half.

Day made six free throws in the final 54 seconds to nail down the victory for the Camels. The Thorobreds committed two turnovers and missed two shots on their final four possessions.

In the regional semifinal game at 6 p.m. Friday, Campbell County will play Clark County (29-4) in a showdown between the two teams with the best records in the 10th Region this season.

Campbell County beat Clark County, 78-70, in a regular season game on Dec. 9. The Camels had four double-figure scorers in that game with Jolly getting 30 points and 18 rebounds to post a double-double.

South Oldham 65, Walton-Verona 59

Walton-Verona made a strong comeback in the fourth quarter, but South Oldham came away with a 65-59 victory in the first round of the 8th Region tournament on Wednesday at Henry County.

This is the second consecutive year that Walton-Verona’s season ended with a loss to South Oldham in the regional playoffs. In Wednesday’s game, the Bearcats finished with a 51-45 scoring advantage in field goals, but they were 8-of-16 at the line while the winners converted 20 of 27 foul shots.

South Oldham used an 18-8 scoring run in the second quarter to build a 26-21 halftime lead and extended it to 52-42 in the third quarter. The Bearcats pulled to within 57-55 with 1:28 left in the game, but the rally fell short.

The leading scorers for the Bearcats, who finish the season with a 26-6 record, were senior point guard Brennan Stanley with 19 points and junior guard Garrett Jones with 15. Stanley, who made five of the team’s nine 3-point goals, also had four assists and six rebounds.

Senior guard Zach Clinkenbeard, a three-year starter for Walton-Verona, got into foul trouble in his final game and and finished with five points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.
