Shields to headline NKU’s Friends of Steely Library fundraiser on May 23 in Newport


Northern Kentucky University’s Friends of Steely Library organization is holding a fundraiser on May 23 called “Good Food • Good Drinks • Good Books” at New Riff Distilling in Newport.

Proceeds from this one-of-a-kind event will support the Friends of Steely Library scholarship, established in 2016 to help high-achieving library informatics students continue and complete their degrees. The program is set to begin at 7 p.m. and will conclude at 10 p.m.

The Good Books portion of the event will feature former NKU head coach Ken Shields and local author Richard Polt. Shields recently published his autobiography, “Nothing More, Nothing Less, Nothing Else,” and he is NKU’s all-time winningest men’s basketball coach. Shields, who built NKU into an NCAA Division II powerhouse in the 1990s, is also known as the sports community’s good humor man and a local hero.

Polt is a typewriter enthusiast and current Xavier professor of philosophy. He is the author of three books, with his most recent, “The Typewriter Revolution: A Typist’s Companion for the 21st Century,” documenting the history and practical tips on his favorite subject. He is also a contributor to the documentary “California Typerwriter,” featuring Tom Hanks.

The event will also will showcase local culinary specialists and beverage experts from New Riff Distilling.
