CovCath baseball coach closing in on 1,000 career wins
Covington Catholic baseball coach Bill Krumpelbeck needs seven more wins to reach the 1,000 mark in his 42-year career with the Colonels program.
Krumpelbeck entered this season with a 974-413-2 career record, according to statistics posted on the Kentucky High School Athletic Association website. The Colonels have won nine of their last 10 games to raise their current record to 19-7 and give their veteran coach 993 career wins.
There are only three other Kentucky high school baseball coaches who have reached the 1,000 mark in career wins. The leader is Bill Miller, who won 1,144 games in 39 years at Pleasure Ridge Park in Louisville. He passed away last month after a long battle with cancer.
CovCath has won 20 or more games for 31 consecutive seasons under Krumpelbeck. His 2002 state championship team posted a 40-3 record, one shy of the state record for wins in a season.
The Colonels have also won nine regional and 23 district championships under Krumpelbeck. He is a member of the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame and the Northern Kentucky High School Athletic Directors Hall of Fame.
Beechwood advances to All “A” Classic baseball semifinals
Beechwood advanced to the semifinals of the All “A” Classic state baseball tournament with an 8-7 win over Walton-Verona in extra innings on Sunday in Lexington.
A two-run single by sophomore Marcus Berger in the bottom of the 10th inning won the game for the Tigers, who will play Somerset in a semifinal game at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Whitaker Bank Park in Lexington.
The small-school state tournament was postponed Saturday due to heavy rain and the four first-round games were played on Sunday. Despite rain and lightning delays, Beechwood won the last game under the lights on Sunday night.
In the top of the sixth inning, Walton-Verona tied the score, 6-6, on a two-run double by senior Jake Kopser. The Bearcats took a 7-6 lead in the top of the 10th when sophomore Travis Brauer knocked in the go-ahead run. But Berger won the game for Beechwood with his big hit in the bottom of the 10th.
The other semifinal match-up on Wednesday will be Hazard vs. Raceland at 5:30 p.m. The date and time for the championship game will be determined after the semifinal games are completed.
