Prep Sports Notebook: Simon Kenton freshman among state leaders in fast-pitch softball statistics

Simon Kenton softball player Macy Krohman ranks among the state leaders in several categories in the latest statistics posted on the Kentucky High School Athletic Association website.

Going into Friday’s game, the freshman was third in slugging percentage (1.413), fifth in on-base percentage (.727) and seventh in batting average (.630) based on statistics turned in by teams in the state. In 17 games, she had 29 hits in 46 at-bats with nine doubles, nine home runs and 18 walks.

Krohman, who accepted a scholarship offer from the University of Illinois last summer, is also one of the top pitchers in the state with a 1.55 earned run average and eight wins. She allowed 17 earned runs in 77 innings.

This is Krohman’s fifth season on the Simon Kenton varsity softball team. She has set multiple team records, including most career home runs (14) and most home runs in a season (9). During the summer, she plays on the Beverly Bandits select team and was ranked among the nation’s top players in the graduating class of 2021.

Simon Kenton has won nine of its last 11 games to raise its record to 13-5.  The Pioneers made it to the 8th Region semifinals last year and have two juniors, three sophomores, five freshmen and five eight-graders on the current roster.

Bellevue, Ludlow post vacancies in head coaching positions

The Bellevue football team and Ludlow boys basketball team will have new head coaches next season. Both high schools have vacancies for those positions posted on their websites.

Woody McMillan resigned as head coach of the Bellevue football team after three seasons. His teams compiled a 11-22 record and lost in the first round of the Class A playoffs each year. The Tigers posted a 5-6 record last season with two of the losses coming by margins of two and five points.

Randy Wofford is stepping down as Ludlow boys basketball coach with a 61-79 record over the past five seasons. In his second season, the Panthers won the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference Division III title with a 12-0 record and he was named Coach of the Year.

Ludlow posted a 6-21 record in Wofford’s final season as head coach. He sent an email to explain the reason behind his resignation.

“I have another opportunity that has come into play that will not allow me to devote the time that the kids and program both deserve,” he said. “It was an extremely tough decision, but it’s an opportunity that I can’t pass up.”

Top basketball players to receive awards at banquet on Tuesday

C.J. Fredrick of Covington Catholic and Adam Kunkel of Cooper will share the honor of being named Player of the Year in Northern Kentucky boys high basketball at the Greater Cincinnati Basketball Hall of Fame banquet on Tuesday at Receptions in Fairfield.

Fredrick and Kunkel were the leading scorers on the two teams that played in the 9th Region championship game. CovCath won the regional title and went on to win the Kentucky state tournament. Fredrick was named most valuable player on the state all-tournament team.

Campbell County senior guard Taylor Clos was named Player of the Year in Northern Kentucky girls basketball. She led her team to the semifinals of the 10th Region tournament and a 29-4 record.

Scott Ruthsatz of CovCath and Beau Menefee of Campbell County will receive awards for being named Coach of the Year in Northern Kentucky boys and girls basketball.

Two former Northern Kentucky basketball players — Jack Jennings of Holmes and Jackie Bearden-Mistler of Dixie Heights — will be among nine people inducted int the GCB Hall of Fame that night.
