Hilltop Campus project advances in Covington; neighborhoods reminded about RIPPLE Effect

Tuesday night at its regularly scheduled meeting, the Covington City Commission unanimously approved an ordinance allowing for the construction of The Park Pointe project, an 82-home subdivision on a hillside overlooking the city. The project will build single-family homes on the 27.7-acre site of the former Hilltop Campus of Gateway Community & Technical College.

Most of the land — 20.2 acres — is in Covington, with the rest in Park Hills.

Like a wave, the city wants to wash over a single neighborhood, bringing about revitalization and change.

Commissioner Tim Downing made sure to promote the city’s next open house event, The RIPPLE Effect, which will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, at City Hall.

City officials said they hope to implement those changes by the first of the year, which could include public improvements (like street reconstruction or resurfacing, sidewalks, landscaping, lighting, etc.) and more city services (like small-business incentives, façade improvements, waived or reduced permits and code-enforcement sweeps).

Also on Tuesday:

– Three hires were approved:

Patrick Duffy as Human Resource Generalist

Christopher Myers as Historic Preservation and Planning Specialist

Stephanie Bacher as Solid Waste and Recycling Supervisor

– Mayor Joseph U. Meyer was absent from the commission meeting because he was traveling to the country of Georgia to observe the country’s election process.

– Commissioners noted that Trick or Treating will officially be observed from 6 to 8 p.m., Halloween night, Wednesday, Oct. 31.

There will be no meeting on Election Day. And because there is no meeting on the fifth Tuesday of the month, the next regularly scheduled Covington Commission meeting will be a caucus meeting held at 6 p.m., Nov. 13, at the Covington City Hall at 20 West Pike St.
