St. Aloysius reunion host and former crossing guard Ken Williams greets 1941 graduate Jean Krischler.

Alumni of St. Aloysius School in Covington shared a meal and memories at an all-school reunion last week.

About 120 alumni came together at the Devou Park Golf Course Clubhouse. Graduates traveled from as far away as Utah and Washington state to pay tribute to their beloved school, which closed in 1979.

The building was converted to apartments for senior citizens.

St. Aloysius Church burned down in 1985 and was never replaced.

The all-school reunion began as an idea to bring together some classes in the late 1950s, but then grew to include everyone because of the overwhelming response said Ken Williams, one of the organizers who graduated from the 8th grade in 1959.

Williams acted as emcee and quizzed the audience with school trivia.

The two oldest graduates at the reunion left St. Al’s for high school just months before the U.S. entered World War II.

Loretta Scherder McKinley and Jean Krischler graduated from the 8th grade in 1941. They’re both 91 years old. They had no trouble remembering lots of stories of their time in grade school, including memories of a nun who used to rule her classroom with a golf club that she would occasionally swing in the direction of misbehaving boys.

“Reunion organizers did a great job,” said Krischler. “I loved seeing old friends and even making some new ones,” she said.
