Two high school quarterbacks who surpassed 200 yards in total offense during season-opening victories last week will be going against each other Friday when Brossart visits Newport for a 7 p.m. game.

In his debut as Brossart’s starting quarterback, Trevor Schadler completed 10 of 14 passes for 185 yards and rushed for 87 yards on 14 carries in a 24-8 win over Dayton. Using his athletic skills in a run-pass offense, the junior generated 272 of the Mustangs’ 426 total yards.

Newport quarterback Kaleal Davis got his senior season off to a good start by passing for 155 yards and rushing for 103 in a 19-14 win at Harrison County. Davis scored the Wildcats’ first two touchdowns on runs of 23 and 39 yards and threw a 38-yard TD pass for what turned out to be the winning score.

Davis also made eight tackles as a defensive safety for the Wildcats. He accepted a scholarship from Indiana State to play that position on the next level.

When the two teams were Class 2A district rivals, Newport won four straight games over Brossart by big margins in 2011-14. They renewed the series after the Mustangs returned to Class 1A and they defeated Newport by scores of 30-16 in 2017 and 6-2 last year.

Newport went on to post a 6-5 record last season. It was the first time since 2014 that the Wildcats finished with more than two wins. Davis played a major role in his team’s turn-around. In his first year at quarterback, he averaged 97 yards passing and 47 yards rushing in the spread offense that new coach Joe Wynn installed.

Brossart also finished last season with a 6-5 record. Schadler did a little bit of everything as a sophomore on that team. He had 205 yards receiving, 153 rushing and 156 passing for a season total of 514 yards. He moved into the quarterback position following the graduation of two-year starter Tyler McDonald last spring.

In another interesting matchup on Friday’s schedule, Lloyd will be facing its former head coach when it takes the field against Scott at 7 p.m. in Taylor Mill.

Last spring, Eric Turner resigned as Lloyd’s head coach after six seasons to take charge of the Scott program. But his first game with the new team did not go very well as Highlands whipped Scott, 42-13, last Friday.

Scott senior running back Quincy Perrin, who rushed for more than 2,800 yards and 35 touchdowns over the last two years, was injured on the second play in last Friday’s game and did not return. That changed the Eagles’ game plan and they ended up getting five passes intercepted.

“His status for this week is still up in the air,” coach Turner said of Perrin.
