High school football players put their names in team record books with exceptional senior seasons

Scott running back Quincy Perrin and Newport Central Catholic quarterback Paul Kremer put their names in team record books during senior seasons that ended last Friday.

Perrin rushed for 103 yards in a loss to Boyle County and finished with a four-year career total of 5,061 yards. He’s the first Scott running back to surpass the 5,000-yard mark and ranks fifth on the list of Northern Kentucky’s all-time leading rushers.

The four players ahead of him are Shaun Alexander of Boone County (6,662), Cory Farris of Boone County (6,227), Steve Everson of Newport Central Catholic (5,633), and Ricky Buckler of Bellevue (5,277).

Perrin rushed for 1,783 yards this season, which ranks second in team history. He did set single-season team records in rushing touchdowns (24) and total points scored (162). He also holds the top spot in career rushing touchdowns (63) and total points scored (438) in the Eagles’ record book.

Kremer completed 19 of 37 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns in a close loss to Louisville Holy Cross that capped his three-year varsity career with the Thoroughbreds.

The quarterback ended up passing for 4,538 yards and 55 touchdowns, which are both second in NewCath’s career record book. He also ranks sixth in single-season passing yards (2,157) and third in single-season touchdown passes (26).

Kremer and Perrin were both named 2019 Player of the Year in their respective districts by the Kentucky High School Football Coaches Association. The other local players who received that honor were Travis Brauer of Walton-Verona, Cameron Hergott of Beechwood, Michael Mayer of Covington Catholic and Chase Crone of Simon Kenton.

The Coach of The Year district award-winners included Steve Lickert of NewCath, Paul Wiggins of Brossart, Jeff Barth of Walton-Verona, Noel Rash of Beechwood, Ben Nevels of Holmes, Dave Trosper of Conner and Jeff Marksberry of Simon Kenton.

Two local football teams will be playing in state semifinal games on Friday. Bowling Green (9-3) will be at CovCath (13-0) in a Class 5A game at 6 p.m. Beechwood (8-5) will visit Mayfield (12-1) in a Class 2A game that starts at 7:30 p.m. local time, which is 6:30 p.m. in Mayfield.

The winners of both those semifinal games will play in state championship finals on Saturday, Dec. 7 at the University of Kentucky’s Kroger Stadium. The Class 2A game is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the Class 5A game is set for 8 p.m.
