Niece scores 20 points as NKU women post 80-72 win over Wofford; Thomas More women lose in Arizona

Ally Niece scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Northern Kentucky University women’s basketball team to an 80-72 win over Wofford (S.C.) on Friday night at BB&T Arena.

Carissa Garcia added 17 points off the bench for NKU, which shot 51.8 percent from the field. The Norse rallied from a 27-23 deficit by hitting 64.3 percent of their shots in the second quarter to take a 45-42 lead into the locker room.

Niece ignited a 13-0 run in the second stanza with a 3-pointer. Garcia netted 14 of her 17 points in the first half.

NKU outscored Wofford 22-15 in the third quarter and cruised to the win. The Norse improved to 6-5, while the Terriers dropped to 6-7.

Molly Glick scored 16 points for NKU, while teammate Kailey Coffey finished with 11 points and nine rebounds. Emmy Souder chipped in six points and 10 rebounds for the Norse, who have won six of their last seven games.

Jamari McDavid led Wofford with 16 points. The Terriers shot 39.7 percent from the field and lost the rebounding battle by a 46-35 margin.

NKU begins Horizon League play Dec. 28 at Green Bay.

THOMAS MORE WOMEN LOSE IN ARIZONA: Carroll (Mont.) College jumped out to a 19-2 lead Friday and coasted to a 68-48 win over Thomas More in the Phoenix Frontier Classic.

Danielle Wagner scored 23 points to lead Carroll, which is ranked No. 25 nationally in the NAIA poll. The Fighting Saints (9-5) held Thomas More to just 30.6 percent shooting from the field and dominated the backboards with a 42-27 rebounding advantage.

Emily Schultz led Thomas More (10-3) with 22 points and nine rebounds. The Saints, who are ranked No. 21 in the NAIA poll, were 0-for-10 from 3-point range. Thomas More entered the game No. 2 nationally in the NAIA in 3-point percentage at .414.

Thomas More concludes the three-day tournament Saturday by playing Providence (Mont.) at 2 p.m.
