Northern Kentucky high school athletes set statewide records in three events during the indoor track and field state championship meets held at Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center in Louisville last week.
The indoor record-setters were Brossart senior Ava Walters in girls shot put (42-10.25), Cooper senior Paul Van Laningham in boys 3200-meter run (9:09.48) and Simon Kenton senior Alexis Howard in girls long jump (18-7.25).
In the fall, Van Laningham set a state record at the Class 3A boys state cross county meet by completing the 5,000-meter course in 15:01.12.
There were also seven meet records set by local athletes competing in three classes.
One of them was Beechwood junior Tyler Fryman, who posted the fastest times in the Class 1A boys 200- and 400-meter races. He was also a member of the record-setting 4×200 boys relay team.
Beechwood won the Class 1A boys team title and Covington Catholic finished on top in the Class 2A boys team standings. Brossart placed second in the Class 1A boys and girls indoor state meets.
