Obituary For Gerald Thelen

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gerald Thelen, who died peacefully on September 17, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Hospital at the age of 85.

A lifelong resident of Northern Kentucky, Gerry was a proud 1957 graduate of Covington Catholic High School and earned his degree from Thomas More College in 1961. He dedicated over five decades to his professional career, retiring in 2018 as President of the G.W. Thelen Co. in Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky.

Known for his commanding presence and generous spirit, Gerry was deeply committed to his Catholic faith and community. He was a devoted member of Blessed Sacrament Church and actively supported numerous Catholic organizations. His service to Thomas More College was extensive and impactful—he served on the Foundation Board, including its Executive Committee, and held roles as President of the Alumni Association, Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees, and member of the Presidential Search Committee. He was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Service Award in both 1972 and 1983 and served as a Trustee for the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities. In recognition of his athletic achievements, Gerry was inducted into the Thomas More University Sports Hall of Fame in 2012 for his basketball career.

Gerry’s unwavering support of Covington Catholic High School included serving as President of the Boosters and Chairperson of the Annual Fund Drive Campaigns in 1985–1987 and again in 1998. He was named Bishop Howard Alumnus of the Year in 1983. In 1996, he also served as Chairperson of the Covington Diocesan Appeal.

He found joy in spending time in Longboat Key, Florida, where he cherished moments of relaxation and reflection.

Gerry was married to his beloved wife, Bonnie, for 61 years. Bonnie, also a Northern Kentucky native and a 1963 graduate of Thomas More College, shared a beautiful life with Gerry, raising five children, fifteen grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

He is survived by Bonnie and their children: Monica DeFraites (John), Jon (Ashley), Thomas (Sally), Peter (Marlo), and Andrew (Patty). He was a proud grandfather to Burke and Jack DeFraites; Jake, Hannah, Grace, and Nick Thelen; Heidi (John) Christian; Macy, Patrick, and Brynn Thelen; Abby, Luke, and Michael Thelen; Kyle and Ava Thelen. He also leaves behind great-grandchildren JB and Kinsley Christian.

Gerry had a big body and an even bigger heart. His love for his family and his faith was the cornerstone of his life. He never knew a stranger and his smile could fill a room. He was a man for all seasons.

Visitation will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m.

Memorial donations may be made to: · Thomas More University, Covington Catholic High School, or to The Point/Arc of Northern Kentucky.
