Obituary For Herbert LeRoy Burkey

Herbert LeRoy "Herb" Burkey I, of Johnstown, CO, passed away at his home on February 22, 2025. He was born on March 8, 1938, in Newport, KY, to Roy and Clara Schneider Burkey. He was preceded in death by his parents and a newborn son.

Herb grew up in Northern Kentucky and graduated from Simon Kenton High School in 1956. Following graduation, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy. After his military service, he worked in various trades before finding his true calling as an engineer with Union Pacific Railroad. His career led him west to Fort Collins, CO, where he and his wife, Pat, made their home until his retirement from Union Pacific in 2003.

In 1957, Herb married the love of his life Patricia “Pat” Bryant, and together they shared 67 years of marriage. He is survived by Pat and their four children: Charles Burkey (Pamela), Debra Martinez (Gary Prochilo), Herbert Burkey II (Jeanette), and Karen Marcy (Brian). He also leaves behind six grandchildren—Charles Burkey Jr., Brandon Burkey, Elizabeth Shilof, Katie Martinez, Emma Marcy, and Jack Marcy—as well as numerous great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Herb had a passion for everything University of Kentucky basketball, traveling to Arizona, refinishing antique furniture, and spending time with his family—especially his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his strong work ethic and morals, quick wit and off the wall humor. His memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Dad, this isn’t goodbye. We will see you later.

Private family service have already been held. A celebration of life to be held at a later date.
