High marks: NKU golfer Zach Wright is carding low scores on the course and high grades off

Growing up in the Northern Kentucky area, Zach Wright knew from the beginning what he wanted to do and where he wanted to go.

Wright, a senior criminal justice major at Northern Kentucky University and a member of the Norse men’s golf team, says he chose NKU for the academics first, and the golf program second.

“My favorite thing about NKU is the small class sizes,” Wright says. “I already knew most of the guys on the golf team and also knew Coach Landrum, assistant Coach Shearer … He played a great role in my college decision.”

With consistent golf practices at 2 p.m., Wright says managing being both a student and an athlete is “very difficult.”

“It’s nonstop,” he says. “Between school and golf … managing both at the same time is something that takes a lot of planning.”

That time management paid off when Wright was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Freshman of the Year the last year NKU was Division II in 2011-12.

It isn’t all about the recognition for him though. Since joining the golf team, Wright says the group is inseparable.

“Our golf team is very close and everyone gets along,” he says. “We are constantly together and it is very nice to have such a close group of friends.”

In his small amount of spare time, the 22-year-old from Dry Ridge likes to fish and spend time with his family and friends. In fact, Zach’s sister, Macy, has just signed to play on the Norse women’s golf team beginning next year.

“Macy signing with the women’s team here at NKU is a great accomplishment for her,” Zach says. “It will be amazing to be able to come and watch her in the next few years represent a school that I have been so close to.”

Playing golf at the college level was never a question for Wright.

“It’s something that I enjoy doing and playing at this level has always been a dream of mine,” he says.

Although, after Wright finishes his career here at Northern, he plans to pursue a bigger dream of his — law school. But he won’t be giving up his love of golf anytime soon.

“Golf has played a great role in my life and I will continue to play for the rest of my life,” Zach says.
