The Kentucky Department of Parks will no longer sell Confederate battle flags or merchandise featuring the flag at park gift shops, officials announced today.
Under the policy, items that feature both the U.S. and Confederate battle flags, educational materials such as books, DVDS and other interpretive media that put the flag in historical context, may be sold at the gift shops. And the Civil War battle re-enactments held annually at certain parks are not affected under the guidelines.
In addition, future contracts with individuals and organizations that provide services or rent facilities at state parks will be subject to this policy.
Kentucky’s park policy is modeled after one recently established by the National Park Service in the wake of the shootings last month in Charleston, South Carolina.
