Early goal by Frey the difference as Norse women top Louisville in soccer exhibition matchup

An early goal from sophomore midfielder Jessica Frey lifted the Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team over ACC foe Louisville by a score of 1-0 in exhibition action on Wednesday at NKU Soccer Stadium.

The Norse maintained a run of possessions early on in the match, capitalizing on the first shot of the game when Frey found the back of the net in the fifth minute of action. Junior Sami Rutowski found sophomore Macy Hamblin who dished the ball up to Frey at the close left wing for the 1-0 edge.

“Our players have worked very hard in the short time they have been together preseason, and the results of their efforts paid off tonight,” head coach Bob Sheehan said. “We had a beautiful goal set up by Sami and Macy and our team defended well.

The exhibition match was split into three thirty minute periods, with NKU recording four of its seven total shots in the first period to Louisville’s one.

The defense shined in the final two periods as the Norse fought through a Cardinal scoring attack in the 48th minute, with redshirt junior goalkeeper Brooke Schocker recording back-to-back saves. Louisville made another late offensive push with ten minutes remaining before the NKU defense regained control to preserve the 1-0 lead.

“We achieved many of the goals we set out for in this particular exhibition game. Overall we are very pleased with the outcome,” Sheehan added.

The Norse wrap up exhibition play on Sunday when they host Western Kentucky at NKU Soccer Stadium at 4 p.m. The match is set to air on ESPN3.
