Governor Steve Beshear today announced that the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) will soon be opening bids for construction of a second section of the project to expand and improve the KY 9 corridor in Newport.
“This project continues the substantial progress that we have made to transportation infrastructure throughout Northern Kentucky,” Gov. Beshear said. “This corridor project will greatly improve access to Newport as well as the Taylor Southgate Bridge. When the entire project has been completed, its benefits will be enjoyed for generations.”
The new KY 9 corridor will be a four-lane roadway with bike lanes and sidewalks from the Newport flood wall near 12th Street to its ending point at the intersection of Third and York streets. The project is being built in three sections, the first of which is underway between 12th and Ninth streets.
KYTC next will open bids for the northern portion of the project, from Fifth Street to the Taylor Southgate Bridge. It will include two roundabouts. The final phase of the project, a middle portion tying the southern and northern ends together, is expected to be under construction in 2017.
