Holy Cross turned up its defensive pressure in the fourth quarter and defeated St. Henry, 46-35, in the quarterfinals of the 9th Region All “A” Classic girls basketball tournament on Tuesday at Beechwood.
By limiting St. Henry to just one point in the final period, Holy Cross was able to pull away and pick up the victory. The leading scorers were Holy Cross guard Dejah McClendon with 12 points and St. Henry freshman Chisom Iloegbunam with 11.
Beechwood knocked off Lloyd, 51-35, in the other quarterfinal game on Tuesday. Junior guard Ally Johnson made five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 20 points for the Tigers.
Beechwood will play Holy Cross in a regional semifinal game at 6 p.m. Thursday with the championship final set for 7 p.m. Saturday at Beechwood. Holy Cross won regional and state championships in last year’s small-school playoffs.
In the 8th Region All “A” Classic boys’ tournament, Walton-Verona defeated Trimble County, 57-40, in a quarterfinal game on Tuesday at Carroll County. The Bearcats will play Williamstown in the semifinal round at 7 p.m. Thursday.
