Ross McFadyen, United States Air Force Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) Specialist, presented to a group in Northern Kentucky last week.
He explained the possible threats facing our Kentucky communities from natural disasters to terrorist attacks.

McFadyen explained strategies the state could implement to minimize the consequences of a crisis. For example, he suggested that Kentucky could fortify its electrical grid against specific terrorist threats.
McFadyen took the audience from the big picture national issues down to personal strategies for survival. He had a number of items on display from water filtration systems to tools to for hunting and fire starting.
This presentation was just an introduction to the survival classes he puts on in his Western Kentucky location.
Participants in his survival classes can fully submerge themselves in a real world survival experience learning to live off the land in the elements.
McFadyen says it is important to differentiate survival from comfort. There are many luxuries you can do without, but survival is about maintaining your core body temperature and consuming the right amounts of food and water. He pointed out that those most vulnerable in a disaster are people reliant on medications for their survival.
He suggests keeping at least a three-month supply of any prescription medications you might need to survive.
