Opal Evans celebrates 107th birthday at Atria Highland Crossing residence; says ‘get out and move’

Atria Highland Crossing, a senior living community, celebrated the 107th birthday of resident Opal Evans, surrounded by family, friends, and staff.

Ms. Evans has a simple formula for a long, healthy life: “Get out and move; don’t just sit and mope.”

Evans moved to Covington when she was seven years old and ran Evans Jewelers with her late husband in Latonia from 1932-1970.

Opal Evans was recognized at Covington's Centennial Celebration as the city's oldest resident.

They had one daughter, Barbara Barns. She has five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Even at age 107, Evans has made sure to remain active physically and mentally.

Evans said she stays active by reading, knitting and doing puzzles.

She takes daily walks, too.

She credits much of her good health to remaining active throughout her life and to her “clean lifestyle” — she doesn’t drink alcohol or smoke. Along with the obvious benefits to the community, continuing to give back is important to Evans. She encourages her peers to be a voice in the community, saying it’s never too late to get involved.

Atria Highland Crossing is located 400 Farrell Drive in Fort Wright.
