Six charged in drug ring at Boone County Detention Center that police say led to death of inmate

The Boone County Sheriff’s office has arrested six people in connection with a drug smuggling ring at the Boone County Detention Center Work Camp.

Boone County Sheriff’s officials say the smuggling operation led to the carfentanil overdose death of work camp inmate Timothy Marcum in October.

The Sheriff’s office released the following statement regarding the arrests:

Boone County Sheriff’s Office investigators obtained warrants for and arrested six (6) people in connection with smuggling drugs into the Boone County Detention Center Work Camp located at 5359 Bullittsville Road in Burlington, Kentucky over the course of the last month which ultimately led to the carfentanil overdose death of fellow work camp inmate Timothy Marcum on October 16, 2016.

Inmates at the work camp arrested are:

Johnny Shelton, 39 of Cincinnati, Ohio, Adam Masuck, 30 of Florence, Kentucky, Gordon Wanser, 36 of Burlington, Kentucky & Chad Prodoehl, 34 of Independence, Kentucky.

They are *charged with Engaging in organized crime, Promoting contraband 1st degree & Trafficking in marijuana. Shelton, Wanser, and Prodoehl are also *charged with Trafficking in controlled substance 1st degree.

Additionally, Valerie Napier, 37 of Florence, Kentucky and Stacia Shelton aka Stacia Lindsey, 41 of Cincinnati, Ohio are *charged with Engaging in organized crime, Promoting contraband 1st degree & Trafficking in marijuana. Stacia Shelton is currently lodged in the Hamilton County, Ohio Detention Center awaiting extradiction.

The month long investigation which consisted of identifying the links/relationships and then the roles they played between the participants consumed hundreds of man hours for the two man specialized team.

Engaging in organized crime is a Class B felony punishable by 10-20 years in the state penitentiary, Promoting contraband 1st degree is a Class D felony punishable by 1-5 years, Trafficking in a controlled substance 1st degree is a Class C felony punishable by 5-10 years, & Trafficking in marijuana is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to one year.
