Turfway Park in Florence provides daily selections and comments for the Tribune during the live racing meets
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25
RACE 1
MAXINE looked good breaking her maiden and appears to be in a good spot to make it two in a row tonight. CAPE CAROLINE ran evenly when dropped to his level last out and is the one to beat. HOT rates a chance.
RACE 2
GREENHORN drops in class for Wesley Ward after flashing speed against better at Gulfstream. He takes on older runners tonight but he rates the edge with Julio Garcia aboard. CLEVER NOW has been off since October but looks dangerous despite the layoff. CITIZEN CESAR looked good winning his Turfway debut and is a contender.
RACE 3
ARYA was no match for Rulelikecleopatra last out but ran well to finish fourth in that one. She drops back to the bottom for Doug Danner and looks best at this level. KATE N ABS REWARD was claimed from a winning effort and has a solid record over this track. She should run well again tonight. MARTHA ROSE also comes off of a win at this level and has to be respected.
RACE 4
SPIN HARD is a Zayat runner from the high profile barn of Brad Cox. It’s a bit puzzling to see him ship in to run in the $7,500 maiden claimer but give him the edge with leading rider Alonzo Quinonez named to ride. BAR TRICK has been a beaten favorite in his last two but also take the class drop and figures to be dangerous. ZARMAN had trouble in his debut at Gulfstream Park West and has been training steadily for Wesley Ward.
RACE 5
HARLAN’S HOWLING dropped to the bottom last out and came away with a solid win. He runs right back at the same level and figures to make it two in a row for Mike Maker and Albin Jimenez. HE’S A DANDY CANDY looks second best. SMACK DOWN woke up last out and rates a chance.
RACE 6
SHAKEYOGROOVETHING is a twelve year old veteran who regained his winning form last out. He has won races going two miles so the added distance will be no problem and he can make it two in a row tonight. NATIONAL DEFENCE is very good right now. The one mile and three quarters distance is a question mark but he beat several of these same rivals last out going a mile and a half and will be tough to beat at short odds. COZY KITTEN is also capable of running well at this distance.
RACE 7
LIMERICK LADY was a beaten favorite last out but has a solid overall record here at Turfway and moves to the barn of Mike Maker. Give her the edge tonight. OMNIVELLY has the speed to be on or near the lead and is the one to catch. POM POM POWER drops in class and definitely fits at this level with Jimenez aboard tonight.
RACE 8
NEVER GROW OLD overcame a very rough trip to win impressively last out. This is a much tougher field but if she can avoid trouble she can make it two in a row with Garcia back up for Wesley Ward. GILDED LILY looked very sharp in her maiden win for Mike Maker. She drew off in the stretch and tonight’s added distance should not be a problem. ON HER HONOR is another one who looks like she has talent. She was second in a stakes race at Ocala after an impressive maiden win here at Turfway. She is a definite contender in what looks like a very good allowance race.
RACE 9
PEGASUS KITTEN drops in class for Ramseys/Make and looks like a solid bet to win at short odds in the finale with Jimenez back aboard tonight. MYKINDACAT has been a beaten favorite in her last two and figures second best. WILLIN’ GRACE is lightly raced and should like tonight’s added distance.
