Local students among winners of statewide ‘Grow Your Dough’ savings campaign


Last week, the Kentucky Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy®  recognized student poster contest winners at the state capitol during Kentucky Saves Week. Governor Matt Bevin issued a proclamation officially declaring Kentucky Saves Week from February 24 through March 4.
 
This year’s poster contest had a theme of “Grow Your Dough” and was open to students in fifth through eighth grades across the commonwealth. The first-place winner from each grade received a $50 award from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis – Louisville Branch.

All students who placed received a certificate of merit and a letter of congratulations from Governor Bevin. The winning posters were displayed at the state capitol during the month of February and will remain on display through March.

The 2017 winners are:

Fifth Grade:

1st – Millie Boemerman, Beechwood Elementary, Fort Mitchell
2nd – Vanessa Colina, Bowen Elementary School, Louisville
3rd – Kaydance Marie Hauskins, Allen County Intermediate Center, Scottsville
 
Sixth Grade:

1st – Gatlin Harris, North Middle School, Radcliff

Seventh Grade:

1st – Avery Cavacini, Highlands Middle School, Fort Thomas
2nd – Jade Rehberger, Highlands Middle School, Fort Thomas
3rd – Addison Mack, Highlands Middle School, Fort Thomas

Eighth Grade:

1st – Mikka Thompson, Madi Corbin and Hailee Corbin (Team Entry), Green County Middle School, Greensburg
2nd – Gunner Bush and Jack Hessig (Team Entry), Green County Middle School, Greensburg
3rd – Kylie Buley, Green County Middle School, Greensburg
 
During the awards presentation on February 28, winning students, their families and other guests heard a keynote address from OJ Oleka, Chief of Staff and Assistant Treasurer in the Office of Kentucky State Treasurer Allison Ball. Oleka congratulated the winners and emphasized the importance of saving, as well as highlighted Kentucky’s new vehicle to save and invest for disabled citizens, STABLE Kentucky accounts

Kentucky Jump$tart President Kelly May announced the poster contest winners, and Jennifer Hunter, assistant extension professor with the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service, presented the awards from Extension’s piggy bank design contest.

Kentucky Jump$tart President May noted, “Students should be proud for placing in this contest. Jump$tart received entries from 123 students from across Kentucky, and we appreciate the work and creativity the students put into their posters. Every entry is a winner.”

Kentucky Jump$tart also hosted an information booth in the capitol annex Tuesday where partners distributed free information on saving money and the public could enroll as “Kentucky Savers.” Anyone can sign up online at www.kentuckysaves.org. Followers of Kentucky Jump$tart on Facebook received daily savings tips and access to photos from the event.

Kentucky Jump$tart strives to motivate people of all ages to save money and supports Kentucky Saves Week each year. Kentucky Saves Week is part of America Saves Week and the America Saves campaign.
