Newport Central track coach, teacher Dave Ueding retiring after 50 years of service

Long time Newport Central Catholic High School Teacher and Cross Country and Track Coach, Dave Ueding has announced his retirement.

Ueding has held these roles for over 50 years.

He began at Newport Catholic as a math teacher in 1965.  During his tenure at NCC he coached the boys track team for 47 years and the boys cross country team for 37 years.  He was also the head coach for the girls cross country team from 1982-2001 and for one year he coached the girls track team.

NCCHS Principal Ron Dawn expressed his gratitude and respect for Mr. Ueding saying, “Dave’s longstanding commitment to our NCC school community is so appreciated and he will be missed.

“He has dedicated his life to the Catholic education of so many students through his teaching and coaching.  He taught me when I was a student here and for the one season when I decided to run track, I had the pleasure of having him as a coach.  Mr. Ueding has impacted the lives of so many young people over the years.  He was so generous with his time here at school.  For over forty years he handled the score book and kept stats for the basketball team and drove the school bus transporting students to various school functions.  He exemplifies the traditions of Newport Central Catholic.  He is truly a legend. We wish him the very best.”

Ueding expressed his thanks and gratitude to all of the past and present faculty and staff at NCC.

“NCC has been good to me.  I am grateful to all the young men and women I have had the honor of teaching and coaching over the years, and I appreciate the support of all the parents,” he said.  “I have always tried to prepare my track and cross country teams so that when the state meet was over, they could say they enjoyed the season so much that they wished they had another meet the next week.  I would not expect the students in my classes to say the same thing, but I hope I have given them the knowledge they need to help them succeed at the next level.”

In November 2015, the Coach Dave Ueding Scholarship was established by a generous benefactor of Newport Central Catholic.  Contributions to the scholarship fund are welcome.
