Legislative leaders have named the 10 members of a bi-partisan panel on school safety.
The School Safety Working Group was decided upon by House and Senate leadership, in the wake of the shooting at Marshall County High School earlier this year, in which two students were killed and 18 others injured, 14 by bullets and four others while trying to flee.
Senate President Robert Stivers, R-Manchester has named Republican Sens. Max Wise of Campbellsville, Danny Carroll of Paducah and Alice Forgy Kerr of Lexington along with Democrats Ray Jones of Pikeville and Johnny Ray Turner of Prestonsburg.
House Speaker Pro Tem David Osborne, R-Prospect, appointed Republican Reps. John Carney of Campbellsville, John Blanton of Salyersville and Brandon Reed of Hodgenville to the group as well as Democrats Will Coursey of Symsonia and George Brown, Jr., of Lexington.
Wise and Carney will be serving as co-chairs of the working group.
In a statement issued by the House Majority Caucus, the panel will hold meetings around the state throughout the 2018 Interim period to discuss proposals to improve school safety across Kentucky. Their goal is to make recommendations for consideration by the 2019 General Assembly when they convene in January.
The working group will hold their organizational meeting at 1 p.m. Monday, June 4, at the Capitol Annex in Frankfort.
