Do you know what time it is right now? Check your clocks — did you turn them back one hour?

November 7 — the first Sunday in November — at 2 a.m. is when we should have turned our clocks back an hour.

So go back to sleep if you didn’t change your clocks, or use your newfound hour to best advantage.

From the Farmers’ Almanac

The Farmer’s Almanac reminds us that the return of Standard Time means the sun will rise a little earlier (at least by the clock) so if you’re an early riser you will enjoy the rays as you have breakfast. And you’ll “gain” one hour of sleep.

The bad news? It’ll be dark by the time many get home from work.

The Almanac tells us at least 40 countries worldwide observe Daylight Saving Time, including most of Canada and the U.S., except for Arizona and Hawaii.

The idea behind moving the clocks twice a year is to take better advantage of the sun’s natural electricity (or light).

So, Kentucky, time to adjust (and it does take time) — and be sure to check your clocks.

Check your smoke alarm too

And while you’re at it, help keep your family safe by testing your smoke alarms when you turn back your clocks this weekend. Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half, says the Red Cross.

Make certain there is a working smoke alarm on every level of your home. Also check the manufacturer’s date of your smoke alarms. If they’re 10 years or older, they likely need to be replaced because components such as batteries can become less reliable. Follow your alarm’s manufacturer instructions.

The Red Cross provides installation of free smoke alarms — simply call 844-207-4509 to set up your installation appointment.

In addition, practice your home fire escape plan with everyone in your household until they can get out in less than two minutes — that’s the amount of time you may have to escape a burning home before it’s too late. Visit redcross.org/fire for more information, including an escape plan to practice with your family.
