The Scott football team that lost two games by one point earlier this season pulled out a close win Friday when the Eagles scored a touchdown and two-point conversion with less than two minutes left on the clock to come away with a 37-34 victory over Rowan County in a Class 4A district seeding game on Friday in Morehead.

The Eagles’ leading scorer was senior Nolan Hunter, a two-way starter who caught a 32-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, returned a blocked punt 37 yards to the end zone in the second quarter and caught the two-point conversion pass after the winning TD.

Rowan County’s final possession ended when Scott junior defensive back Boomer Klusman picked off a pass to seal his team’s victory. The Eagles now have a 3-3 record that includes one-point losses to Conner (21-20) and Boone County (14-13).

Scott junior running back Dylan Giffen scored on a 63-yard run in the second quarter and caught a 9-yard pass from Desani Lane for the winning touchdown. The team’s leading rusher was senior Bennie Hill, who picked up 121 yards on 21 carries and scored once.

Scott’s next three games are against district opponents Harrison County (2-4), Boyd County (4-2) and Holmes (4-1). Last year, the Eagles placed second in the district and then won two playoff games to reach the Class 4A region finals.

Local teams end run of state titles in All “A” Classic fall sports

For the first time in 12 years, Northern Kentucky teams did not win a state championship in any of the five All “A” Classic fall sports.

State tournaments in boys and girls soccer took place last weekend in Frankfort. After winning first-round games, all three local teams — Newport Central Catholic boys, Brossart girls and Walton-Verona girls — were knocked off in the semifinals.

Ryan Desmond and Owen Roeder of NewCath were selected to the boys all-tournament team. The girls all-tournament team included Kaylee Neace and Payton Kenny of Walton-Verona and Jill Planeaux and Brooke Shewmaker of Brossart.

In this year’s other All “A” Classic fall state tournaments, St. Henry was runner-up in volleyball, St. Henry placed fourth in boys golf and Brossart placed fifth in girls golf.
