Once-abandoned KY pup named finalist in Farm Bureau’s 2024 Farm Dog of the Year competition

Kentucky Farm Bureau (KFB) has announced a Kentucky dog has been selected as one of five finalists across the nation for the People’s Choice Pup award in the American Farm Bureau Federation’s 2024 Farm Dog of the Year Competition.

Daisy, a mix of several breeds, was entered by KFB members Shelby and Lora Ennis of Elizabethtown. While Daisy may have been rescued by the Ennis family, they were prompted to enter her in the national American Farm Bureau competition because of how often Daisy has come to the rescue of others.

When Lora Ennis had a hard fall at home, Daisy alerted Shelby Ennis of the accident. Luckily, Lora was OK, but the couple quickly realized there was something special about their rescue.

“When Lora came home from the hospital, she was so weak and stayed sitting in her chair for the next two days, but Daisy was extremely quiet around her,” Shelby Ennis said. “She apparently understood what was going on and that Lora needed to rest.”

Daisy is anything but typical, and rescuing Lora Ennis wasn’t her only experience in helping someone. Most recently, while on a walk at a nearby nature trail, Daisy discovered someone in distress under some brush just off the path. The person was in the shadows of the bushes, and it looked like he had been there for a while.

“It’s hard to tell how long he would have been there had Daisy not found him,” said Shelby Ennis.

He alerted local responders who attended to the person, and the Ennis’ once-abandoned pup has become informally known as “Daisy the Rescuer” thanks to her heroic efforts.

Members of the public are invited to help Daisy get the recognition she deserves by voting for her from now until Nov. 8 at kyfb.com/Vote4Daisy. The winner will be announced at AFBF’s annual meeting in January.
